Plugins

WordPress is the blogging software that I use on my site and from time to time I’ve found that I needed a plugin or two to perform something on this site. In the spirit of community sharing, I release these plugins and modifications to existing plugins to the public.

Feel free to grab these plugins, use them as is, modify them or use them as a basis to create your own plugins. If you do create something nice and useful with these plugins, do drop me a line so that I can also check it out.

Comments Closed: I’ve closed the comments as I seem to be receiving more spam than comments. Use the contact form if you wish to get in touch with me about the plugins.

    Hi

I’m very interested in this plugin, but it seems not working under WP 2.6.2. Will it be upgrated so that id would work?

    Greetings

    Stachu

  3. Ashwin says:

    Stachu,

The plugin in it’s original form seems to work in WP 2.6.3 that I tested this morning. I think you are looking for a feature (based on your message off-site) that isn’t there.

I will add a feature to allow you only delete specific posts as opposed to all of them when the expiration date is hit.

Casey, I intend to make the plugin WP 2.7 compliant if it isn’t in the next couple of days.

  10. Ashwin says:

@Rob, I just updated the plugin and tested it with the latest 2.8.4 version of WP. If you are getting a specific error, please provide those details so I can fix it.

Hi. I got the following when I visited the plugin’s options page

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 40 bytes) in /home/………/wp-settings.php on line 288

  12. Adam says:

    Hi.

I have wp 2.7 and have your updated plugin set to delete post 45 days and older. However, when I update the options, none of the post are deleted. I am still with the same amount of posts that were there before I installed and activated the plugin.

  13. Ashwin says:

@3dogs, this is a limitation of your webhost and PHP configuration. Please raise the limit if you can, also try deactivating some of your other plugins and see if this error goes away. If it does, you have might have a lot of plugins sucking up a lot of memory (possibly including mine).

@Adam, can you please go the Delete action page and confirm that the right category is chosen and saved there? Then you should be able to go to the Preview action and perform an immediate delete to confirm that the posts are indeed deleted. If that works, then it should also work in the automatic way it always has.

  14. Adam says:

@Ashwin, Yes, the correct category is selected. I update the option and then go to the preview and put in something like 20 days. I then hit update and I get a refresh with nothing under “Preview Of Post Deletion/Move”. I have about 3,000 post on the site.

    Hi,

I try to use Auto Delete Posts.
But I cannot select “All Categories”. My WP version is 2.8.4.
    mmm…Why???
Is there a method of solving this problem?

  16. Ashwin says:

@bintaman, the option to select multiple categories was requested and I’ve added it to the update that I’ll be publishing shortly. I’m working on one last feature and if it looks like that’s going to take longer than it should, I’ll push the rest of the update and work on that one feature for a later update.

So either way, expect something to be sent tonight and you should be able to update the plugin and select multiple or all categories in a day or two..

  17. Adam says:

    Hi, Ashwin:

It looks like none of the posts have been deleted. Were you able to go in and poke around?

  18. Jay Versluis says:

    Hi Ashwin,

I’m trying to use your excellent Auto-Delete-Posts plugin for my a cople of automated websites. These read feeds, then syndicate them into one site. Your plugin would be an ideal way to keep them under control.

Trouble is, it’s not working as expected. I’d like it to delete 50-100 posts per day (not in one go, but throughout the day). It moves posts to a different (say “expired”) category, but doesn’t want to delete.

If I update a post (to start the process manually), all I get is a blank page upon publishing it. The change is made, but I think the plugin hangs somewhere.

    Any thoughts?

  19. Ashwin says:

    @Jay,

Just sent you an email, but basically the plugin can only perform one action at a time in its current state. Looks you’re looking to delete all posts more than a day old but only a handful, so that’s an option I could add.

Alternatively, requests have been made to add a archive & delete option whereby posts would expire and be moved into a archive category and posts from the archive category that over a year (or other large number of days) old would be deleted..

Looks like you’re also looking for something like that?

  20. Jay Versluis says:

    Hi Ashwin,

thanks for your email. I understand that MOVE and DELETE are mutually exclusive options. In my 2.8.4 installation, I’ve tried both – and it looks like MOVE works fine, but DELETING seems to cause the plugin to hang.

I’m not quite sure why, possibly because there are too many posts to delete. I’ve checked my database, and PHPMyAdmin seems confident there are no errors. I can manually delete my posts, but the plugin doesn’t want to do it.

Basically the site syndicates 100+ posts a day using the Feed WordPress plugin, so now I’m looking for a way to delete them automatically after say 3 months.

I can setup a user name for you on a beta version I’ve got running ifyou like, so you can have a poke.

It seems I’m looking for a similar solution that Jay wants where posts in certain categories get moved after a set amount of days, and have them be removed a few days later. Any word on the changes/timespan of this getting implemented?

    Thanks.

  24. josh says:

Does not seem to be working with wordpress 2.9 has anyone had any luck? Thanks

  25. Ashwin says:

@Josh, I just tried the plug with WP 2.9.1 and it worked fine. What specifically is broken for you?

  26. Zaur says:

    i have one problem.

i did install and activate plugin and went to post edit page and enter the the time amount on that box there bottom of the page. And I choose the “Move” option on plugin setting which i want to move the post to another category. BUT HOW CAN I CHOOSE THAT WHICH CATEGORY POST WILL MOVE? THERE IS NO OPTION FOR THAT.
    thanks for everyone

  27. eusnaur says:

Very nice plugin, however with WP 2.9.2 (new feature of trash folder) auto deleted posts goes into trash basket, from where one have to manually empty the trash, which is really defeating the purpose of this plugin and is cloaking the SQL database if somebody keep the posts for long time.

Is it possible to give an option in the plugin to permanently delete the posts avoiding the trash folder altogether?

    Thanks for your support!
    eusnaur

  28. Ashwin says:

Hmm, cool idea with the trash folder, I will add the option to permanently delete the posts..or I may just make the plugin do that automatically..let me take a look, thanks for the heads up..

  29. Lolnerd says:

    Hi Ashwin and all,

so I basically have a site that syndicates stuff from a tumblog. As those are often images of uncertain copyright status, I’d like to show them to my readers, but put this stuff offline after a couple of weeks. I don’t want to delete it, just make it invisible, eg put it to status unpublished or move it to a category that’s not published. Is this plugin capable of the desired funtionality? How do I do that? Thanks!

    Cheers,
    Lolnerd

  30. Ashwin says:

    @Lolnerd,

The Auto Delete Posts plugin also supports moving posts to a different category, so if you have a category that isn’t being published, you can have the posts be automatically moved into that category..
